Taking it to the people

January 12, 2009 - Kylie Saari
William Budd has become a thorn in the school district's side. The problems there, ranging from mechanical, to size, to traffic flow, are compounded by the public's hesitancy to do anything about it. All sorts of big wigs and professionals have come through, giving their opinion on what should be done, but still, area residents are not convinced. So the school board has taken the next step - a smart on if you ask me. They have composed a group of concerned citizens and committed to showing them the issues, as unbiased as they can, and are asking them to come up with some ideas. By May, the group of 25 or so locals will have examined all angles of the problem, from how to fix it to if it should be fixed, and will present to the board their findings. Asking those who have stock in the matter to figure it out is good thinking. Some of the task force are parents of students at the school, some are local businesspeople, some are people who have to drive by it at 8 o'clock and see the mayhem those parking lots create, some are just people interested in the topic. Maybe the group will call for another referendum. Maybe they will float the idea of corporate sponsorship, or perhaps a rearrangement of students is in order. Whatever it is, I hope a solution is found. I certainly don't relish the idea of spending more money in taxes, but overcrowded schools and traffic dangers aren't a good idea either. For the record, my kids don't go to William Budd School. But to take them to school I have to drive by it, and for those of you who have the luxury of staying away, believe me, something needs to be done.
