Staycation

July 29, 2014 - Jennifer Brookens
Technically I'm on vacation this week, but it seems I'm still as harried as I am when I'm on the clock. It's the curse of the staycation.

The idea when I took the week off was to get caught up on all the stuff that slides when I'm running around for work. Yet the house is still a sty and I was so exhausted today (only Day 2 of the staycation) I fell asleep during the 5:30 news. The reason: In an attempt to save some money on daycare, the kids are home and destroying everything in their paths as they try to destroy each other. So far they've nearly destroyed Dad's laptop, one Wii remote, and all hope that I might get something accomplished.

So I've been doing errands. At least in the van, the kids are strapped in and I can turn the radio up over their latest shouting match. It's been daily trips to the grocery store (when the kids aren't fighting, they're downing PB&Js or frozen pizzas by the dozen) and my attempts to get other errands or appointments off the to-do list have been tempered with the timing of other kid activities and whether Fruit Ninja is working on my phone.

I'm trying not to give up hope here, though. We've got back-to-school shopping yet (they groan about the back-to-school part as I silently cheer, but they love the shopping part of it). And maybe - if they haven't driven me stark raving mad by week's end - just maybe we'll sneak in a day to the pool or something else fun. Though my idea of fun might just be making up a holiday like National Siesta Day. Who knows, it could catch on...
