... and we're off!

June 3, 2014 - Jennifer Brookens
The first day of school, I remember how The Boy and The Girl were both bouncing up and down with anticipation. They were ready to get to the bus stop half an hour before the scheduled time. The Girl had spent two weeks meticulously planning out her "first day of school outfit." Fast forward nearly nine months to the last day of school, when five minutes before the bus arrived I had to remind my kids to change their clothes from the ones they wore yesterday and slept in overnight. (Yes, we are a classy bunch!)

And now begins the annual summer whirlwind. The Girl is already booked up until the Fourth of July with special trips, day-camps and birthday parties, and The Boy has begun his heavy campaigns to go to: a) the pool b) Aunt Diane's farm and c) to see Gramma Carol in the mountains. And he wants to do all of these Today!

As I go through my already marked-up calendar for the summer months, it seems everything wants to crash together on the same days and times. And (again) I find myself wondering, "What happened to when summer was fun? When it was a laid back, relax time?" Then I have to go all the way back to my school days, before I had to work for a living. Sometimes it makes me think about year-round school, teaching kids early that life isn't put on hold for three months because the weather's nice. But I guess that's my cynical (and jealous) side talking.

Maybe this year I'll treat myself by enjoying a week to myself while everyone else remains at work, daycamps or daycare. But unless I manage to get outta town without the family (unlikely... they'd never let me go that easily!) I will still have to get a notifying timer of when it's time to play Mom the Chauffeur again. Oh well, at least I'll get the driver's tan this summer... On our marks, get set... and we're off!
