Walking on water
February 3, 2014 - Jodelle Greiner
I did not know snowmobiles could go so fast.
We had a snowmobile while I was growing up, but we usually used it for short trips to church for Christmas program practice on Sundays when it was too much trouble to get the car out.
I was out at the National Straightline Snowmobile Racing event Sunday on Hall Lake and it was something to see those racers gun the engines and fly down that ice. Some of them were clocked in excess of 160 mph.
While it was fun to watch the racers, and it was a beautiful day — below freezing, but sunny with minimal wind — I was not eager to cover the event. The guys giving directions at the lake edge assured me there was more than 2 feet of ice on the lake, but one of the first things I saw was a huge crack in the ice — right under a big truck!
I was born and bred right here, but I’m still not used to walking on (frozen) water.
