October 27, 2008 - Jennifer Brookens
It's definitely fall, heading into winter. All the leaves have blown off the trees and into my driveway, my husband's football broadcasting season is over, and I have my first (and probably not the last) cold of the season. Once upon a time, before I was insane enough to produce offspring, I had A cold once a winter. Now I get a cold about once a month; sometimes getting an encore of a cold just as I'm getting over another one! Any germ bug being passed around at the daycares, preschool or workplaces, our household will be infected. So I'm following the 10 commandments of colds: covering the mouth and nose for every cough and sneeze, avoiding handshakes not to be rude but to spare suffering, and trying to wipe down any surface I may contaminate. But my voice has the rasp of a decades-long chain smoker, and that oh-so-attractive rattling cough to go along with it. It's also time to think of Christmas shopping. I'm going to make mine simple. My wish list as of right now: NyQuil. Lots of it. And a few days off to sleep it away.
