Giving Thanks today
November 28, 2013 - Jennifer Brookens
Today is Thanksgiving, so why am I writing a work blog? Well, I am on the clock today and I am overdue for a blog... That would be the logical explanation. But I've also been mulling around what I am thankful for this season. It's easy to rattle off family, friends, and the first-world conveniences we enjoy. That is all true. But like the Grinch will realize next month, perhaps the holiday is for something more...
It's ironic that this holiday is about being grateful for the things you have, yet half the stores are having their Black Friday sales start today. We're now down to a few hours of giving thanks before the food bloat wears off, and we're off fighting the crowds to accumulate more "stuff." I've heard friends and seen people on Facebook protesting it, yet I wonder if seeing the sales papers will still lure them out for that one — or two, or five — special items.
It seems I need to unplug that Christmas machine earlier and earlier each year...
So TODAY I give thanks: I am Thankful I am able to participate in the crazy holiday spiral. Yes, it's stressful to have so much holiday stuff jammed into 3 1/2 weeks, but I will use TODAY as an example of how to approach it: by being grateful I have so many people in my life that I care about and who care about me when picking out gifts and arranging get-togethers. I am Grateful for my mother, who is an excellent cook and is willing to show off her talents for Thanksgiving and Christmas meals (not to mention putting up with me all these years). I am Blessed to have my two bright and lovely children, who have truly taught me the meaning of unwavering unconditional love. I am thankful for my husband who is usually the level and cool head in our family of chaos. I love that he and I can still have an intellectual conversation and learn things about each other (that is when we're not being interrupted by kid chaos) after being together for nearly 18 years. I am even grateful for my erratic work schedule - it may take some time away from my family, but it also means a lot of times I can adjust it so I can make the most of my time with them.
And finally, I appreciate all of my friends and people out there reading this blog. I truly do enjoy being able to just write what's on my mind sometimes, and when people tell me, "I loved your blog!" it's good to know my efforts are appreciated. Thanks for reading, and Happy Thanksgiving!
