Summer vacation: over before it starts?
May 22, 2013 - Jennifer Brookens
I thought I had found a new tradition for the end of the school year last year, when the moment school ended for the year, I had the kids packed up and on the road for a quick vacation. My daughter was always so broken-hearted when school let out, already missing all her friends but last year was different. How could you cry about school being out when you were going on vacation right away? I had hoped to repeat that this year, but alas Big Oil has quashed that idea.
I think that the prices going up so sharply and so quick has been overwhelming for most motorists. And does it seem that the gas tank is getting lower quicker?! Anyway, this $4.19 gas has me scrutinizing the summer budget a little closer. The immediate "School's out" vacation is scrapped for awhile, with the big trips on hold until at least mid-summer. Will we see any relief by then? Maybe I can still follow through on my promise to the kids to Finally take that trip to Wisconsin Dells this year... But I'm going with the old proverb, "Prepare for the worst, but hope for the best."
At this point, it's really all we can do. That, and invest in some walking and pedal power around town.
