Another inanimate object war

April 15, 2013 - Jennifer Brookens
If you haven't heard from me for awhile, there's a darn good reason... I've been either banging on my rusted-out water heater in the basement, or taking the quickest shower in the history of mankind.

It's the joys of home ownership rearing its ugly head again. Just as I started to do a load of laundry one night, I noticed the water was not getting warm. It usually took a minute or so, but the water was still ice cold. Well, we had just replaced the dryer, could the washer be far behind? No, the kitchen sink also had no hot water. Yes it was silly of me, but it was wishful thinking that I could still have my hot shower that night to end the day.

Cold showers — when Spring STILL HASN'T ARRIVED — just don't cut it.

A service call got the water heater running on borrowed time... just long enough for us to purchase a new water heater. So there goes the paid-off credit card, and there goes what was left of the tax refund. Talk about a cold shower... It also put a few other hopes on the backburner, such as repairing the upstairs bathroom, paying off what was left on one of our vehicles, and there were also the long-shot hopes of getting an upgraded phone for me, and truck-shopping for the husband. But I already knew those long-shots weren't going to make it anytime soon.

The pilot light went out again while waiting for our new water heater to arrive. This time a family friend took pity on us and helped us out, applying his skills and joining us in "percussive maintenance" (the actual art of hitting something to make it work).

So as the countdown is on for our new water heater to arrive and be installed later this week, we're again having hot water on borrowed time. At least if I show up on my friends doorsteps with my favorite towel, robe and rubber ducky, they'll know what the deal is...
