City has new plan

The city of Fairmont has a new plan for plowing the streets. It includes more snow emergency routes, i.e. streets on which parking in prohibited when 2 inches of snow fall. The city also has added a plow, giving it nine vehicles for snow removal.

We appreciate what the city has done, in listening to citizens and looking for ways to improve the snow cleanup process.

Now, citizens need to do their part, by keeping vehicles, garbage cans and recycling bins off the streets during and after snowstorms.

Workers are needed

Amid the ongoing national debate — standoff, really — over immigration is something that gets lost. Businesses, including those in our area, would love to have access to more workers. There is no reason these could not be immigrants, likely coming from south of the border.

What needs to happen is the injection of some sanity into U.S. immigration policy. Start with securing the borders. Then let businesses define their needs. The end result should then be legal immigration that benefits the businesses and workers while not creating chaos for citizens and taxpayers.

Hearing set for Dec. 10

We hope Fairmont citizens take note that the City Council has scheduled a Dec. 10 public hearing on a proposed social host ordinance. It would hold responsible those adults who knowingly allow underage drinking on their property.

The Martin County Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition has been working all year to introduce similar ordinances in towns around the county.

We think people may want to know that the ordinance does not apply to conduct between an underage person and his or her parents, or to religious observances.

Zarling gets back in

Former Fairmont city administrator Jim Zarling, currently serving as a City Council member, has decided to run a write-in campaign for the Ward 3 seat he now holds.

Zarling chose to get back into politics at the behest of a group of supporters. They believe the ward needs a choice in November. As things stood prior, just one candidate — Randy Lubenow — was in the race.

Zarling has always been an outstanding city leader. His knowledge and experience is invaluable. He also brings a reasoned and calm approach to the issues.

Now that Zarling is back in, we hope voters approve. They just have to remember to spell his name exactly right on the ballot.
