Et Cetera …

Rethinking tax policy

The Minnesota House and Senate have approved state tax reform bills prompted by the overhaul of the federal tax code. Gov. Mark Dayton has his own ideas on the subject, and the three entities will have to hash out their differences. All propose changes to benefit taxpayers, in different ways.

We believe the real story is the work of President Trump and congressional Republicans, whose tax bill forced high-tax states like Minnesota to rethink how they do things. This was a master stroke of public policy maneuvering that will have a beneficial and lasting impact.

Sunday sales succeed

The city of Fairmont had to be pushed a bit into giving Sunday liquor sales a try. It turned out to be worth it. Sunday sales are generating revenue and offering convenience to customers. The city says it will continue offering Sunday sales for the foreseeable future. Kudos to those officials who took the chance on Sunday sales and for seeing the benefits.

Fairmont is a city with a municipal liquor store, so there are no other liquor stores here. It’s only fair then that the city do all it can to accommodate customers in a closed market.

School may get deputy

We were intrigued to see that Martin County and Granada-Huntley-East Chain may cooperate in hiring a deputy as a school resource officer. The arrangement could be beneficial to both sides.

GHEC Superintendent Mandy Fletcher notes that many students these days come to school with so many more issues than kids dealt with in the past. A school resource officer could help in these matters.

GHEC is the only school district in the county without a local police department, so there are safety and security issues at stake in these discussions too.

Disappointing behavior

President Bill Clinton’s personal behavior in office, and prior, was atrocious. We all remember why. Republicans were quick to condemn Clinton, and even tried to impeach him for covering up liaisons with various women. Impeachment was too far to go, though, and the Senate acquitted Clinton. Defenders said it was “just sex.”

In the end, the public’s verdict on Clinton was that he is a scoundrel. That is, a dishonest and unscrupulous person.

That people today are feeling the same way about Donald Trump’s dealings with women, and his comments about it, should come as no surprise.
