Volunteers earn letters
Fairmont High School has awarded letters to the first group of students who earned the honor for volunteering. Kudos to these students, and to the school for promoting their good deeds.
Students in grades 9-12 are eligible to apply and earn a varsity letter in volunteering every year. Each student must complete 100 hours of unpaid volunteer work.
The students involved learned quickly that they have a huge impact on the causes they support. This lesson will serve them well into adulthood.
Blue Earth eyes cleanup
The city of Blue Earth is pushing forward with efforts to clean up unsightly properties and have dilapidated housing demolished. We believe the city is on the right track, and we encourage Blue Earth residents to cooperate.
Well-maintained properties bring value to a community. They are worth more in sales value, and they create a community aesthetic that says people living there care, and want the town to reflect that pride.
Blue Earth is taking legal steps to enforce a cleanup, but people should do the right thing on their own, regardless.
It’s IHD weekend here
Interlaken Heritage Days is taking place this weekend in Fairmont. We encourage area residents to get out and enjoy the festivities with friends and family.
The events are taking place all over town this year, with the triathlon in its usual spot at Gomsrud Park this morning. There will be a car show downtown today, and many activities taking place at Heritage Acres. The big parade is set for 6 p.m. downtown, followed by the street dance.
The festival shifts to Gomsrud Park on Sunday, running from noon to 4 p.m.
We extend thanks to organizers and sponsors for all they do to put on this festival each summer.
Great outlet for seniors
Fairmont’s Let’s Go Fishing with Seniors fishing trips and lake tours began this week. Every summer, volunteers take boatloads of guests out on the pontoon to enjoy cruising on Fairmont’s lakes, and maybe even drop a line to see what the catch of the day might be.
We encourage those interested to contact the group about an outing. The web page is www.fairmont.lgfws.com
Kudos to those volunteers who put in the time and effort to help our senior citizens enjoy the great outdoors.
