Rosen offering more
Erma Rosen just keeps on giving. In 2009, she established the nursing scholarship that bears her name. Now she is adding $100,000 to the fund so that more area nursing students can get some help in obtaining their degrees.
This kind of generosity, based in Rosen’s one-time (unfulfilled) desire to be a nurse herself, is to be commended. It is a great legacy, noble in its desire to see others go after their dreams in life and succeed.
We are all lucky to live here with good people like Erma Rosen.
Sounds like good plan
Martin County Fair Board is working on a drainage problem at the arena at the fairgrounds. The fair plans to partner with the city on a $100,000 project to eliminate water coming off the roof of the arena and into the building itself. The problem is an issue with the tilt of the parking lot.
The fair board would like the county to help out with the asphalt portion of the project. The county would like to mull the plan.
We believe there is a drainage problem that must be remedied, and it seems like solid thinking has gone into a solution.
FFA is great for teens
Today marks the end of FFA Week, which promotes agricultural studies at high schools. FFA is a great way for young people to learn a lot about life and themselves, and helps them develop knowledge and skills that will be valuable when they move on to college and into the workforce.
Our area schools do a great job with their FFA programs, and they are to be commended.
Right here in Fairmont, FFA was reinstituted not that many years ago with help from businesses. The program continues to amaze and impress the community.
It’s simple: Don’t speed
The Iowa Court of Appeals this week rejected challenges to use of automated speed enforcement cameras in Cedar Rapids. The camera systems ticket motorists driving more than 11 mph over the posted speed limit.
Those challenging the cameras say they are unconstitutional, but the U.S. Supreme Court has already disagreed.
The cameras are simply technologically advanced police officers, in essence. There is a simple and easy way to avoid being assessed a fine by these machines: stop speeding.
