King’s son displays constructive attitude

The late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said repeatedly that his goal was an America in which people were judged solely by the quality of their actions. Egged on by liberal Democrats and many in the entertainment world, millions of people seem to have forgotten that advice.

Martin Luther King III, the great civil rights leader’s son, apparently has not.

On Monday, even as many had proclaimed they already have written Donald Trump off as somehow dangerous, King met with the president-elect. He emerged to tell reporters their discussion was “very constructive.”

King said his goal was to emphasize the need to minimize divisions among Americans and to improve voter participation. Trump told him he plans to reach out to all, including those who did not support him in the presidential election.

After being disappointed many times by those who proclaimed themselves to be in favor of equal rights, the elder King adopted a policy of accepting people for what they did, not necessarily what they said. Clearly, his son has adopted the same cautiously constructive attitude.

King could have joined the anti-Trump chorus. He took the less safe, less popular approach of working to get good things done. In that, he both honored his father and furthered his crusade,
