Time for ban to end

Legal products are sold every day of the week, normally. Not so with alcohol in Minnesota. Because of an archaic law, there are no Sunday sales.

But an influx of new state lawmakers at the Capitol, thus perhaps the demise of old-fashioned thinking, could mean the end of the Sunday ban during the coming legislative session. It’s about time.

Liquor stores would still be free to decide whether to be open on Sundays. Some might want to be, and that should be up to them, not antiquated regulation in the 21st century.

Machines are vulnerable

Green Party presidential candidate Jill Stein is less than an asterick in history. Her kooky ideas and her pointless and hopeless recount fights in places like Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Michigan were all doomed to failure.

It has been noted, though, that Stein’s recount fight in Pennsylvania highlights an ongoing issue. It is one of 11 states in which there is nothing to recount, because these states use machines that store votes electronically. There are no paper ballots at all, and these machines could be vulnerable to hacking. That is a concern that must be addressed.

Mine may be revived

Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton this week suggested that the future of a proposed copper-nickel mine in northern Minnesota may improve under President Donald Trumps administration. We hope so.

President Obama’s hyper-partisan approach to environmental issues has stymied the Twin Metals venture. Dayton, likewise, dealt a blow to the project by denying Twin Metals access to state-owned land last spring.

Twin Metals says it can mine without harming the wilderness while it creates thousands of good-paying jobs. We say give the company the chance.

New Opera House leader

We congratulate Blake Potthoff, who has been named the new executive director of the Fairmont Opera House. He is from this area and has experience with the venue through Civic Summer Theatre.

The Opera House is a community treasure in Fairmont that hosts wonderful artists who entertain and inspire audiences throughout the year.

The youthful Potthoff plans to continue and improve the amazing things the Opera House has to offer. We wish him luck, and encourage citizens to support him and this historic site.
