Opportunity to learn

Fairmont Area Schools does great things, offering a range of learning opportunities for its students. One of its strengths is vocational classes that teach skills that can translate into rapid movement into the workforce.

A neat addition to this curriculum is an opportunity for members of the community to participate and gain some knowledge. The school is offering a Saturday welding class that is open to adults for a nominal cost of $250. We encourage those interested to contact the district.

Disaster strikes quick

We were among those shocked to see the horrific building collapse in Sioux Falls last week. One person was killed.

The building, constructed in 1916, was being converted into a drugstore, with a reputable contractor undertaking the renovations. The collapse remains something of a mystery.

We hope that those who own and operate downtown buildings across our region take the time and effort to properly inspect them for possible structural deterioration. And any renovations must take into account structural integrity.

Police do great job

Fairmont’s new police chief, Mike Hunter, is now officially on the job. We wish him well, and extend our thanks to the police department as a whole for being of such professional quality and character that this kind of transition can be accomplished with what appears to be relative ease.

Fairmont’s police officers are on the job 24/7 every day of the year. Their range of duties is immense, including up to facing the possibility they could lose their life in the line of duty on any given day. We appreciate their commitment, and know citizens do too.

How about freedom?

News reports state that Democrats are trying to “rebuild” in the Midwest following a devastating national election loss. We wish them well and good luck because America needs two strong political parties offering great ideas to ensure a quality future for our nation.

Might we suggest that Democrats consider embracing freedom in the economic sphere as they have no problem doing when it comes to cultural or personal issues. If people have the right to marry who they want and have power over their reproductive system, shouldn’t they also be free from government shackles in operating a business and keeping what they earn?
