Caution is good idea

“To me it means we need to be cautious and prudent,” Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton said of the state’s projected $1.4 billion budget surplus expected in 2017. News of the surplus arrived Friday. We believe Dayton offers a good way to look at the situation. There are a lot of unknowns right now, including the state of the national economy and how the Trump administration will affect many things.

At the same time, we like what Republicans who control the state Legislature are saying about finding savings in the state’s $44 billion budget. Those savings combined with the surplus could mean tax cuts that would help many people and help spur economic growth.

Adults can decide this

Minnesota has approved the use of medical marijuana for post-traumatic stress disorder. The change takes effect in August.

Anything the state does that moves our society toward more freedom is OK with us. At the same, time remain skeptical of medical marijuana as a treatment. However, we understand that some people swear by it, and we see no reason to deprive them of relief. Adults should be able to decide for themselves what they wish to do with their bodies, and face the consequences for their actions.

First round of grants

The first-ever round of the Schmeeckle Foundation grants have been awarded, with $83,000 going to projects in Martin County that serve early childhood care and education; serving the disabled and elderly; and the arts.

We offer congratulations to recipients and thanks again to the foundation that looks to carry on the legacy of long-time county resident Juanita Ellen (Teubner) Schmeeckle.
