Volunteers aid cleanup

To the Editor:

Fairmont Lakes Foundation, Inc. put out a call for volunteers to assist with cleaning up the lakeshores of Sisseton Lake and George Lake. The following list of volunteers is the result of that call:

Cheryl Petrowiak, Chuck Anderson, Paul Grussing, Sherman Kumba, Joe Maidl, Erin Maidl, Jim Draper, Marlin Wrucke, Paul Sundholm, Dan Kehrberg, Mike Madsen, Lemar Madsen, Troop 56, Roger Bloomgren, Kathy Smith, Kevin Smith, Doug Bancks, Jamie Winegard, Mari Phelan, Terry Anderson, Dale Ratcliff, Kathy Ratcliff, Linda Katzenmeyer, Lauren Scott and Bruce Scott.

In addition to donating three hours of their time, many volunteers donated the use of their boat, kayak, pontoon, or brought their waders to assist with the cleanup.

The bad news: We collected and removed 700 pounds of rubbish from these areas of our lakes. The good news: We removed 700 pounds of rubbish from these areas, including one television set that someone had thrown in the lake.

Also good news: Volunteers were able to see the effect of storm sewer runoff. With the recent heavy rains, the mouth of every storm sewer outlet into the lakes was a collection point for cans, plastic bottles, styrofoam, etc., that got swept into the storm sewer from our streets.

Once again, stewardship can be hard work, but when practiced collectively, it gets a lot easier … and it really is rewarding.

Thank you for all of your support

Michael J. Katzenmeyer, chairman
