Paul J. Peterson

SHERBURN — A Celebration of Life service for Paul J. Peterson, 88, of rural Sherburn, Minn., will be 11 a.m. Friday, March 29, 2019, at the Evangelical Covenant Church, 61 Main St. East in Trimont, Minn.

Paul was called to his eternal rest Tuesday morning, March 19, 2019, at Temperance Lake Ridge in Sherburn, Minn. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, March 28, 2019, at Kramer Family Funeral Home in Trimont, and one hour prior to the service Friday at the church.

Paul Peterson was born April 6, 1930, in Elm Creek Township, to Walter and Nettie (Persson) Peterson. He graduated from Triumph – Monterey High School in 1948. He attended the University of Minnesota from 1948-1949 before returning home to farm. While attending the University of Minnesota, he played baritone in the U of M marching band. He met Joan Manson at the University, and they were united in marriage on Nov. 14, 1953, at the St. Anthony Park Congregational Church in St. Paul. They farmed in Martin County west of Trimont, raising their family in the farm house where Paul had grown up. He retired from farming in 1996. He and Joan stayed on the farm until 2013 when they moved to Temperance Lake Ridge. Paul was a member of the Evangelical Covenant Church of Trimont where he was active in choir, was church chairman and a Sunday school teacher. He served on the Deacon board and was a member of the worship team, playing his recorder. When Paul was in his 50’s, he took up watercolor painting and was a member of the Martin County Artisans Guild. He displayed and sold his artwork at many art and craft shows, both locally and statewide. He especially loved to paint barns, farm sites, and native prairie wildflowers. He also enjoyed woodworking and collecting agates. Music was an important part of his life. In addition to participating in high school and college band, he was an active member of the Fairmont Community Summer Band, receiving an award for 62 years of participation in 2012. He was also a member of the Trimont Centennial Band, playing in local town celebrations and parades. He is survived by his son, Dennis of rural Sherburn; daughters, Anne Sheppard and husband Doug of rural Sherburn, Carol Barrett and husband Tom of Chanhassen, Minn.; granddaughter, Jamie Larson and husband, Robb and their children Lucas and Bailey of rural Sherburn; grandson, Kyle Sheppard and children Eric and Finley of rural Sherburn; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife Joan; parents, Walter and Nettie Peterson; brothers, Cliff and Les; sisters-in-law, Nancy and Kathryn; and nephew, Karl Peterson.
