FAIRMONT — A funeral service for Harold Bergt, age 98, of Fairmont, Minn., will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, 2018, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Fairmont. Visitation will be from 5:30-7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 2, 2018, in the chapel at Lakeview Methodist Health Care Center in Fairmont, and one hour prior to the service Saturday at the church. Burial will follow the service in Lakeside Cemetery, Fairmont.

Harold passed away Monday, Oct. 29, 2018, at Lakeview Methodist Health Care Center in Fairmont. Lakeview Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Fairmont is assisting the family with arrangements.

Harold Martin Bergt, son of Otto Reinhold Bergt (1881-1966) and Paula Louise (Lueders) Bergt (1889-1987) was born on the Bergt farm located 15 miles northeast of Potter, Neb. on Aug. 1, 1920. He had two sisters, Eunice (Bergt) Polster (1914-2002) and Bernice (Bergt) Carls (1918-2002). Harold was baptized by Reverend Otto Braunschweig on Aug. 15, 1920, at St. Paul Lutheran Church located 12 miles northeast of Potter. He was confirmed on April 29, 1934, by Reverend G.H. Boehnke. His confirmation memory verse was Titus 2:11-12. He attended St. Paul Lutheran School (rural Potter) from 1926-1934. He then attended Concordia Lutheran High School in Seward, Neb. from 1934-1938 and then Concordia College in Seward from 1938-1941. Harold received a Masters of Education Degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1964.

He was married to Helen Lafrentz by Reverend Hugo Nieting at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ute, Iowa on Oct. 15, 1943. He served as a Lutheran school teacher and Principal at Lutheran schools in Chester, Neb. (1941-1942), Ute, Iowa (1942-1944), Coffeyville, Kan. (1944-1945), Hastings, Neb. (1945-1959), and Fremont, Neb. (1959-1982). After Harold’s retirement, they moved to a home on Budd Lake at 1358 Oak Beach Drive, in Fairmont (1983). He received the Master Teachers Award from Concordia University, Seward, Neb. in May 1983. A few of his many positions held include: Nebraska District (LCMS) Board of Directors and District Mission Board; Alumni Association President of Concordia College, Seward; National Department of Lutheran Elementary School Principals – Board of Directors; President of Dodge County Education Association, Fremont, Neb.; and Board of Directors – Martin Luther High School, Northrop, Minn. Harold is survived by three children: Carolyn Bergt of St. Louis, Mo., Richard Bergt of Springfield, Ill., and Gerald Bergt and his wife, Pauline, of Fairmont, Minn.; niece, Janice Borcherdt of Fairmont; grandchildren: David and Amanda Bergt of Fairmont, Minn., Jered and Christine Sprecher of Knoxville, Tenn., Jonathan and Nastasha Bergt of Woodbury, Minn., Aaron Bergt of Fairmont, Minn., Cory and Kathleen Prelerson of Bellevue, Neb., and Timothy Bergt of Springfield, Ill.; great-grandchildren: Joshua, Hannah, and Caleb Bergt of Fairmont, Minn., Levi, Ezra, and Avram Sprecher of Knoxville, Tenn., Luke and Lillian Bergt of Woodbury, Minn., and Ezekiel Prelerson of Bellevue, Neb.; nieces, nephews, other extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Bergt (December 2012); sisters: Eunice Polster and Bernice Carls; brothers-in-law: Roy Borcherdt, Eric Polster, and Doris Carls; sister-in-law, Erma Borcherdt; and daughter-in-law, Sharon Bergt.

Harold will be remembered as a person of strong Christian faith and a hardworking, devoted, loving teacher, Principal, husband and father.
