DES MOINES — Cheryl Renee Thomas died Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2018. A Celebration of Life will be held 4:30 p.m. Sept. 15, at West End Architectural Salvage in Des Moines, Iowa. Condolences may be offered at tinyurl.com/cherylthomas

Cheryl was born Jan. 11, 1960, in Dire Dawe Ethiopia. Cheryl graduated from Bethel College and United Theological Seminary. Cheryl was licensed to preach the gospel July 16, 1989, at Temple Baptist Church in Minneapolis, Minn. Cheryl was ordained July 18, 1993, at Temple Baptist Church in Minneapolis.

Cheryl served a number of churches in Minneapolis, south-central Minnesota and Des Moines, Iowa.

Cheryl was a passionate advocate for a number of social justice issues, including her work with U.S. Rep. David Minge, Iowans for Gun Safety, Women in Ministry, and many other issues where she could advocate for the disenfranchised. She guided and helped many, and was loved deeply.

She is survived by her husband, Hardy Whiteman; son, John Whiteman, and his partner Kelsey Berryhill; daughter, Glenna Whiteman; her mother, B. Charlene Thomas; sister, Cynthia Thomas and her spouse, Jonathan Sweet; brothers, Peter Thomas and his daughter, Lovetann Ripoll, Charles Thomas, and Wesley Thomas.

She was preceded in death by her father, Glenn Vernon Thomas; brother, John Anthony Thomas; and child, Star.
