Dorothy Ann Grill was born March 13, 1929, on the family farm in Sherburn, Minn., the daughter of Arthur and Estella (Terveer) Grill.

On April 3, 1952, Dorothy was united in marriage to Russell Grotte. This union was blessed with four children, Peggy, Bruce, John and David. Together Dorothy and Russell built and ran the Bell Motel. Dorothy broke new ground as the first female County Commissioner for Martin County. She also was the first female State President of the Association of Minnesota Counties. She was a proud recipient of the Athena Award. Dorothy served on various other local, state and national boards before her retirement in 1991. After the death of her husband, Russell, in October 1989, she found love again when she met and later married William “Bill” Krick in 1991. Bill passed away June 2, 2015. Dorothy was a great mom who always made sure that when the kids got home from school there were freshly baked treats waiting for them. Over the years, she made a tradition of baking Christmas cookies with her grandchildren. Dorothy had a passion for playing Bridge and was a member of many card clubs. She looked forward to hosting cards at her home and catching up with her dear friends. Faith was extremely important to Dorothy. She said the rosary every night, went to Adoration weekly, and prayed for those she knew and loved. She truly felt blessed to have the family and friends that she had in her life. Dorothy will be remembered for her “Bling” and ability to visit with anyone. She would sit front row in church and couldn’t be missed with her sparkling hats. Her trips to the grocery store or out around town always took just a bit longer than normal as she made sure to stop and visit with those that said hello. Despite her cancer, Dorothy was determined to live life to the fullest, and maintained an upbeat attitude. Thanks to the great care of her devoted care givers, she was able to remain in her home. Dorothy’s quiet grace will be greatly missed by those that loved her and called her their friend. Left to cherish her memory are her children, Peggy Wanta and her husband, Bruce, of Bellevue, Wash., Bruce Grotte and his wife, Luz, of Escondido, Calif., John Grotte and his wife, Amy, of Fairmont, David Grotte of Fairmont; 8 grandchildren, Kristen (Erik), Nick, Kayla, Andrew, Rachel (Ethan), Micah (Cara), Megan and Alyssa; great-grandchildren, Cora, Holly, Aiden, and Layla; several very special nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Estella Grill; husbands, Russell Grotte and Bill Krick; and brothers, Donald and Wayne Grill. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the St. John Vianney Endowment fund.
