FAIRMONT — A memorial service for Gary L. Stevens, age 80, of Fairmont, Minn., will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 5, 2018, at Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont, with military honors provided by the Lee C. Prentice American Legion Post 36 and the Martin County Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1222. Visitation will be 4:30- 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 4, 2018, at Lakeview Funeral Home.

Gary passed away Sunday morning, Dec. 31, 2017, at Mayo Clinic Health System in Mankato.

Lakeview Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Fairmont is assisting the family with arrangements.

Gary Lee Stevens was born June 29, 1937, in Fairmont, Minn., to Harold E. and Mercedes F. (Nelson) Stevens. Growing up, he attended school in Fairmont and was a member of the 1956 graduating class. Following his high school graduation, Gary worked various jobs before enlisting in the U.S. Marine Corps. Gary proudly served his country for three years before his honorable discharge in February of 1960.

On Aug. 6, 1960, Gary was united in marriage to Betty Bettin at Trinity Lutheran Church in Welcome, Minn. This union was blessed with four children: Lori, Mark, Greg and Brad.

Gary later married Susan Emberger in Las Vegas, Nev. on Feb. 1, 1998. Gary and Susan made their loving home together in Fairmont.

Gary joined the Fairmont Police Department in 1962, where he was Captain of the police force, proudly serving the community for 26 years. He also volunteered on the Fairmont Fire Department for 20 years before his retirement.

In his spare time, Gary could be found socializing with his many friends and having coffee at Edie’s Restaurant and Hy-Vee. He also frequented Jake’s Pizza with family and friends.

Gary liked to spend time outdoors deer hunting and playing golf. He was a member at Interlaken Golf Course and had seven lucky hole-in-ones.

Gary cherished spending time with his family and rarely missed his grandchildren’s sporting events. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Susan Stevens of Fairmont, Minn.; children, Lori (Jeff) Joyce of Naples, Fla., Mark Stevens of Fairmont, Minn., Greg (Tammy) Stevens of Truman, Minn., Brad Stevens of Moose Lake, Minn.; grandchildren, Nicole Stevens, Tyler Joyce, Dr. Andrew Joyce, Ryan Stevens, Cassandra Stevens, Savannah Stevens, and Parker Stevens; four great-grandchildren; Gary’s beloved sister and favorite brother-in-law, Carmen and Rev. James Bornzin of Silverton, Ore.; other extended family and friends.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Mercedes Stevens.
