Charleen Mae Anderson Martens was born Oct. 1, 1927, on the family farm in Jay Township outside Sherburn, Minn., to Carl Hjalmer and Emma (Forstrom) Anderson. She was raised on the farm, attending the one-room District 29 Country School and graduating from Sherburn High School in 1945.

She married her high school sweetheart, Lloyd Martens, on June 28, 1946, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Dunnell, Minn. Lloyd and Char farmed for 10 years in rural Sherburn, where their three sons were born. In 1957, they moved to Washington, Iowa, when Lloyd began a career with Northrup King Seed Company. The family moved as Lloyd’s territory increased, first to Wells, then Sherburn, Windom, and finally in 1982, to Northfield.

Char loved maintaining and decorating their home. She enjoyed painting, embroidery, jewelry making, other crafts and a multitude of other things. The couple were longtime members of Bethel Lutheran Church.

Survivors include her sons and their wives: Thomas (Cheryl) of Apple Valley, Monte (Patricia) of Minneapolis, Jeffrey of Bay City, Wis.; six grandchildren, Kirstin (Robert), Carin, Patricia, Sarah, Savanna, Justin; two great-grandchildren, Carson and Brooks; two sisters-in-law, Donna Nawrocki of Sherburn and Marilyn (Darrell) Anderson of Sioux Falls, S.D.; and many very special nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 2014; her brother, Kenneth Anderson; and her sisters, Gladys Swanson, Lillian Colton, Nathlyn Martin and Leota Geise. Memorials are preferred to Bethel Lutheran Church.
