Underwood, Ludacris write song

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Country star Carrie Underwood teamed up with Ludacris to co-write a new song, “The Champion,” which will open the Super Bowl on Feb. 4 airing on NBC.

The song and the accompanying video was released Friday. “The Champion,” also written by country songwriters Brett James and Chris DeStefano, will be incorporated into NBC Sports coverage of the 2018 Winter Games as well.

Underwood said in a statement that “our main focus was to celebrate athletes at the top of their game, but we also wanted the song to resonate with people in their everyday lives.”

Library names new poet laureate

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A poet who originally moved from Puerto Rico to Philadelphia for graduate school has been named the city’s new poet laureate.

Raquel Salas Rivera was named the poet laureate for 2018-2019 in a ceremony at the Free Library of Philadelphia on Monday.

Thirty-two-year-old Rivera is a bilingual poet, writing and reading work primarily in Spanish, and later translating into English.

Rivera is the first poet laureate selected by the Free Library, which adopted the program from City Hall last year. The position comes with the expectation that the poet will be a community leader.
