Annual Fun Fair built for families

FAIRMONT — The Family Fun Fair showcases the numerous educational, economic, health and support services available to families in the area.

The big event will take place 4:30-7:30 p.m. March 29 at Fairmont Elementary School. It is sponsored by Fairmont Community Education and Recreation and Early Childhood Family Education.

The purpose of the fair is to assemble local agencies that are advocates for families with young children. Exhibitors provide a variety of hands-on activities and take-home activities for children.

Roni Dauer, director of CER, explained that there will be about 30 exhibits, as well as a family entertainer. The ACME magic show will be held at 5:45 p.m. and 7 p.m. in the cafeteria. There also will be a chance to see several reptiles up close during the Remarkable Reptiles exhibit.

There will be several new attractions this year. These include a tooth fairy from the Martin County early childhood dental network.

“Mayo will be there and they’ll be promoting their new Mile Track Your Steps program,” Dauer noted.

Martin County Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition and youth coalition, YOCO, will provide food, including pizza, water and a healthy snack, as a fundraiser.

Several area churches will promote their vacation Bible programs, while other groups will have information about summer activities for children and families.

“Shoe Sensation comes and does foot-measuring, which is nice,” Dauer said.

Weather permitting, the Fairmont Fire Department’s ladder truck will be in the east parking lot at the school.

The Humane Society will attend, and usually brings along some animals for the children to pet.

This year, students will be able to try out an orchestra or band instrument as well.

Last year, about 650 people attended the fair.

Price of admission is $8 per family, which can include extended family. For more information, contact the CER office at (507) 235-3141.
