Library: Youth events go well

FAIRMONT — The Martin County Library Board on Tuesday discussed the success of recent teen and family events.

Noting that children’s librarian Amber Sternitzke is good at keeping up with what is popular for kids, director Jenny Trushenski noted success with a recent teen/tween after-hours event. Thirty-give children attended a Fortnite-style Nerf game in the building, which Trushenski said was a good number for a Friday evening.

In addition, a Family Tinkerpalooza event was well attended.

“We had about 150 people here and we did get a LSTA [Library Services and Technology Act] grant to buy those STEM activities,” Trushenski said.

The $7,270 grant included Family Storytime, Toddler Tinker Labs, Busy Builders and STEM Saturdays. Programming sessions included STEM activities such as a mobile magnet wall, flight lab wind tunnel, ball runs, see-through easels and big blue blocks.

Trushenski also was pleased to announce an unexpected visitor to the event.

“The grant administrator from the state came and she was very complimentary and impressed by the turnout, and the fact that there were a lot of parents and grandparents with kids, so that went really well,” she said.

Turning to another matter, Trushenski said the library was able to purchase some much-needed equipment for its downstairs area.

“We did get some more tables and chairs for our downstairs meeting room because we just haven’t had enough,” she said. “This year, we finally had some money that we could get some more, both for library events and also when people use the room. The city will be sharing that expense with us, but we just really needed to get them, and now we have about 100 chairs which is about how many people we’re allowed to have down there.”
