Family Fun Night set at Fairmont Elementary

FAIRMONT — The Early Childhood and Family Education program at Fairmont Elementary School is putting on a series of eight “Family Fun Nights” this year.

The first took place in September and the next one will be held 5:30-7 p.m. Tuesday.

“The ECFE program was looking for a way to reach more families and get more people involved so they kind of modified the open gym nights and turned them into Family Fun Nights,” explained Sandy Soelter, a parent educator at the school.

Family Fun Nights are for families with children from birth to kindergarten-age. They take place once per month from September through May. Family Fun Nights are held in the E-2 cafeteria. Each night includes a light meal and a variety of activities for parents to enjoy with their children.

The cost to attend a Family Fun Night is $5 per family per night. However, families also can purchase a punch card for $20 and attend as many of the nights as they like.

Each month features a new theme. The upcoming one will have a lot of pumpkin activities and crafts. There also will be a sensory table and books to read.

Soelter said 82 people attended the September event.

“We’re hoping that we get as great a turnout,” she said. “The first one was free but I’m hoping it doesn’t deter people too much. It’s a great deal. You can eat dinner together as a family here and then there’s a lot of activities.”

Those involved in planning the Family Fun Nights are the school’s three preschool teachers. Two aides also will be there the night of events to help with activities.

The goal of Family Fun Nights is to get more people familiar with ECFE so more people can sign up for classes.

ECFE offers a variety of classes for parents and young children. The first half usually involves some activities while the second half is a parents education piece.

“They don’t have the mess at home and they get that special one-on-one time with their child,” Soelter said. “The more they can do in those early years of development, the better it is for the child.”

Parents can learn more about the ECFE classes at Family Fun Night or they can call the elementary school at (507) 235-6205 for more information.
