Truman looks at sump pumps

TRUMAN — The Truman City Council reviewed a draft of a revised Sump Pump ordinance during Monday night’s meeting. The draft was done by city attorney Jim Wilson and patterned after the city of Olivia’s ordinance.

A description on the ordinance reads, “Truman city code to prohibit discharges into the sanitary sewer system and to provide for inspection of property and to determine illegal connections to the sanitary sewer system and to provide a surcharge for noncompliance with inspections and connection requirements.”

The council decided that the draft will require several changes and clarifications such as a time frame including what dates you can dump into the sanitary system, such as in the winter months, and how surcharges will be handled for those who rent.

Moving along to other matters, a proposed amendment to increase roof mounted solar energy systems to 30 percent for commercial buildings was offered for consideration by the council. The current zoning ordinance allows a maximum of 25 percent coverage. The council may adopt the ordinance at the next meeting.

The council also heard quarterly reports form the fire department as well a from the street department.

Truman fire chief, Dave Bentz, reported that they’re at 12 calls so far for the year, which is about average, but that the hours are much higher than average due to assisting with the Northrop fire. Bentz also let the council know that they are looking to hire a new firefighter and will have another opening soon and will be accepting applications until the end of this month.

Street Superintendent John Bosshart said that they recently finished painting crosswalks in town. Bosshart also said that they hung new signs at the campground as well as at the park.

“I hate to say it but we’re also getting ready for upcoming fall stuff,” Bosshart said.

In other news, the council approved of the following donations:

— $200 from Antrim Township for the ambulance fund.

— $50 from Theresa Hudson for the softball field.

— $10 from Norma Stough for highway flags.

— $750 from Dennis Ricard for campground improvements.
