Holiday Festival set for weekend

SHERBURN — The annual Sherburn Holiday Festival will get underway this weekend with many activities and fun for all.

Sherburn Fire Department will start things off with the “Finger Lickin Chicken Feed” from 5-8 p.m. Friday at the city park, with music provided by Steve Lang.

A free street dance with “The Soup Bones” will begin 8:30 p.m. and continue until 12:30 a.m. Saturday.

On Saturday, all at the city park, there will be a 5K run starting at 9 a.m. with registration beginning 8 a.m.; a vendor/craft show will be held 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.; a sand volleyball tournament begins at 11 a.m.; a bean bag tourney starts at 5:30 p.m.; another free street dance featuring ’50s and ’60s music by “Starfire” will be held from 6:30-9:30 p.m.; and the “Blue Street Ramblers” will play from 8:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. Sunday at the Sherburn Liquor Store.

Also going on all day Saturday at the park will be bingo, kids inflatables, food stands, a beer garden, knockerball, cow-pie bingo, an antique tractor and machinery show, a “Classics by the Park” car show, chainsaw woodcarver demonstrations and music by “Bordertown” from 3-5 p.m.

The festival continues on Sunday with “Heartsong” singing at 11:30 a.m. at the city park. Martin County Pork Producers will serve pork chops on a stick from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and a food stand will be open for burgers.

There will be bingo, kids inflatables, a petting zoo from 2-5 p.m., and then the big parade gets underway at 3 p.m.

After the parade, the BeeKays will sing in the park, and a kids tractor pedal pull, sponsored by Bank Midwest and Martin County Implement, starts at 4:30 p.m.

The festival will end with the raffle drawing (be sure to get your tickets at Bank Midwest in Sherburn or at the park this weekend). There will be over 30 big value prizes, including a Traeger Pro Series wood pellet grill, an LG 49-inch LCD television, two Android tablets, six $50 gift certificates from the Cup N’ Saucer, cash prizes and more.

Sherburn Lions Club has been sponsoring the holiday festival for the past 21 years, and eight members of the local club will be recognized after the parade on Sunday.

Special recognition will be given to two charter members, Jerry Huse and Darv Roebbeke, who have been with the Lions Club in Sherburn since its beginning in 1976.

Certificates will also be given to John Tirevold, 41 years; James Lytle, 39 years; James Klima, 38 years; Nathan Behne, 32 years; Dennis Larson, 32 years; and Gary Manzey, 32 years.

Also going on this weekend will be rummage sales all over Sherburn. These citywide sales are sponsored by the Sherburn Civic and Commerce group. Some will begin Thursday and others on Friday. If you’re having a sale, please get your information and $10 to the Martin County Star office before 5 p.m. today in order to be included on the list of sales. Lists will be available at Casey’s and at Kum & Go.

Minnesota Twins will be offering a free youth baseball/softball clinic Saturday at the ball fields in Welcome. A session for boys and girls, ages 6-9, will be 9 a.m., while ages 10-16 will get underway around 10:30 a.m.

No registration is necessary, just show up with a glove and ready to learn and practice fundamentals of hitting, fielding and throwing.

Dunnell/Lake Fremont Fire Department will hold its annual hog roast Sunday at the Dunnell Community Hall. Serving will be held 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Martin County Relay for Life committee and team captains meeting will be held 5:30-6:30 p.m. Monday in the main classroom at Mayo Clinic Health System hospital in Fairmont.

MCW Community Education will offer a dog training/obedience class from 5:45-6:45 p.m. June 21, July 5, 12, 19 and 26 at the elementary school in Sherburn. The instructor will be Gary Hamman.

The fee is $60 for six sessions. The deadline to register is Monday. For more information, call Community Education at (507) 764-2336.

For the kids: A “Reading Rocks” storytime will be held 3:30 p.m. every Tuesday at the Sherburn Library. There is also a “Rock On” activity day 2 p.m. each Thursday at the library.

Congratulations to brothers Mitch Weber and Dawson Weber who are competing at the Minnesota state golf meet today. Dawson is a junior at Martin County West, and Mitch is a seventh-grader.
