Park Play offers fun for children

SHERBURN — CREST will hold a “Lunch and Learn” event at 11 a.m. today at the Senior Citizens Center in Sherburn.

The topic for this month is “June Brides,” and everyone is invited to bring a wedding photo.

An old-fashioned wedding lunch will be provided free of charge following the program.

If you have a topic you would like to have discussed at a monthly “Lunch and Learn” event, call the CREST office at (507) 235-3833.

It’s Hamburger Night tonight at the Sherburn American Legion. Grilled burgers and more will be served from 6-8 p.m. The public is always welcome.

Children ages 3-7, with a parent or caregiver, are invited to the Sherburn Public Library at 3 p.m. Thursday for “Punk Skunks ­- a Rockin’ Story Time.” This is free and fun for all.

On Saturday evening, the Sherburn Legion will host its monthly steak and shrimp night. Serving is from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Everyone is invited.

The Red Cross Bloodmobile will be in Sherburn on Monday at the Regional Worship Center from 1-6 p.m. If you are able to give blood, please consider doing so. There is someone, somewhere, who desperately needs your donation. Take the time.

The Sherburn American Legion Auxiliary ladies are reminded to come to a “Clean the Kitchen” party at 4 p.m. Tuesday at the Legion. After the kitchen is sparkling clean, they wil have a potluck meal, and the men are invited to join them. The main dish will be broasted chicken.

Everyone’s help is needed and will make the job easier and more fun.

Now that school is over for the 2017-2018 school year, the summer office hours at the Martin County West Junior/Senior High School office in Sherburn will be 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. from now until June 14. Then the school office will be open every Wednesday morning from 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The office will officially reopen with regular hours on Aug. 6

Summer school at Martin County West has been scheduled from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. for June 11-15, June 18-22 and June 25-29. Students will have the opportunity to earn 0.5 credits in math and 0.5 credits in English for high school or to satisfy the remediation requirement for junior high. Since times are condensed, students must attend all sessions in order to earn credit.

Contact the junior/senior high school office at (507) 764-4671 for more information. The deadline to register for summer school is today.

Transportation will be provided to and from Trimont, Welcome and Ceylon each day.

Park Play began this week in our Martin County West communities. It involves games, creative art activities, fun and snack time. Children ages 4 through sixth grade are welcome to attend from 9-11 a.m.

The fee per child is $10 for four weeks of park play. There is a cap of $25 per family.

The dates in Trimont are Tuesdays, June 5, 12, 19, 26; in Welcome on Wednesdays, June 6, 13, 20, 27; in Sherburn on Thursdays, June 7, 14, 21, 28.

Steph Moore and Peg Rankin will be teaching the program this year.

There is a Bike Rodeo in Sherburn on Saturday. Students ages 4 through third grade are invited to get their bicycle checked for safety requirements and skills at 9 a.m. at the Martin County West High School parking lot.

This event is free of charge, and there will be prizes for everyone attending. No need to register.

The Minnesota Twins and the Twins Community Fund will offer a free youth baseball/softball clinic on June 16 at the ball fields in Welcome.

In the event of rain, it will be held at the MCW school building in Welcome. Boys and girls ages 6-16 can participate in this camp. Ages 6-9 are asked to come at 9 a.m., while the 10:30 a.m. session is geared for students ages 10-16.

No registration is necessary. Just show up ready to learn and have fun.

The Twins provide the baseballs/softballs, but students are asked to bring their own gloves.
