Two join race for commission

FAIRMONT — Two challengers have emerged to battle Dan Schmidtke for his seat on the Martin County Commission.

Schmidtke has filed for re-election in District 4. Richard Koons of rural Welcome and Neal Potthoff of rural Dunnell both filed for the office on Monday.

Since there are now at least three candidates in the race, the candidates will compete in the primary election on Aug. 14.

No other challengers have filed for seats in Martin County, but five other current office-holders have. They are: District 2 Commissioner Tom Mahoney of Fairmont, Sheriff Jeff Markquart, County Attorney Terry Viesselman, Auditor/Treasurer Jim Forshee and Recorder Diane Sanders.

Those interested in running for these offices may file during business hours at the Auditor/Treasurer’s Office at the Martin County Courthouse. The filing period ends at 5 p.m. today.
