Food service firm provides update

FAIRMONT — The Fairmont Area School Board on Tuesday heard an update from Chartwells Dining Service, the district’s food service provider. Katy Bazzett, regional director, and Travis Preuss, the Fairmont director, were available to provide some statistics.

Bazzett reported that, between the elementary and high school, numbers are up significantly for breakfast, but down just slightly for lunch. She reported that revenue is flat for a la carte, down for adult lunches and the same for catering.

Preuss began as the Chartwells Food Service director for the district in October. Since then, the company has put up some new signage and done some tasting promos. The high school conducted a breakfast pilot project in December featuring a “grab-and-go” breakfast option near the locker area. Preuss reported the project was successful and the company is looking at continuing it for the rest of the school year.

Preuss noted that the firm plans to evaluate the menus and go over safety issues.

Overall, Bazzett said the food service budget is in good shape and while the labor cost is down, the company is looking to hire someone to work a three-hour shift at each site, as well as looking for four substitutes.

In other news, the school board accepted the following donations:

o $450 from the Fairmont Hockey Association to the food service Angel Fund.

o $250 from Thrivent for STEM materials for the Fairmont Elementary School.
