Knife-wielding man shot, killed

FAIRMONT — A Fairmont police officer shot and killed a 23-year-old man at Fairmont Square Apartments early Saturday, after the man confronted police with two knives.

One police officer was transported to Mayo Clinic Health System, treated for a cut and released.

Local police called on the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension to conduct an investigation, and a BCA truck could be seen in town into the afternoon on Saturday.

Fairmont Police Chief Michael Hunter issued a press release saying two of his officers were dispatched at 2:20 a.m. following a report of someone being threatened at the apartment building in the 1200 block of Victoria Street, where officers made contact with the man. Police say formal identification of the man will be made following an autopsy.

Hunter stated that during the incident, one officer fired his weapon, striking the suspect, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Hunter says officers involved in the shooting have been placed on standard administrative leave during the BCA’s investigation. Their identities will be made known when the BCA completes initial interviews.
