Golden Tie Tuxes opens doors
There’s a new store on West Blue Earth Avenue in Fairmont called Golden Tie Tuxes. Kathy Detert just opened the “boutique,” which offers tuxedo and shoe rentals.
Detert has lived in Fairmont for about 30 years. For 25, she was a vocational counselor for the state of Minnesota, serving Faribault and Martin counties. Most recently, she spent the past four years working at Enderson’s Clothing, where she took measurements and coordinated tuxedo rentals.
Opening her own business was not something Detert had ever really considered, but she saw a need and wanted to pursue a passion of hers — working with and helping people.
“People my age don’t usually do this, but that’s just me,” Detert said with a laugh, explaining that she likes to stay busy and socialize.
Detert gets all of her tuxes through MFW Tux Company, a firm she grew familiar with through Enderson’s.
“They’re just wonderful,” she said. “It’s a great company to work with and the tuxes come in early. I love their service.”
Detert acknowledged that even with taking perfect measurements and ordering carefully, things don’t always go right.
“If something gets mixed up or doesn’t fit, MFW works with me so we can get it fixed quickly. My top priority is for everyone to walk out of here happy,” she said.
Unmistakable in her shop are nine different mannequins that Detert calls her “guys.” They are each dressed in a different style to showcase the varieties of tuxes out there. The newest, most current styles are available, as well as classic styles.
“There’s no pressure with me,” Detert said. “You can stop in and look around and not feel like you need to book with me.”
Golden Tie Tuxes also has measurement cards available. Detert said she is happy to take anyone’s measurements in her shop, even if they are getting their tux elsewhere.
One thing Detert is considering is giving people the option to purchase suits from her. If people are interested in buying, Detert would be happy to have order books and some items available.
“I’m just looking for feedback to see if there’s an interest in that,” she said.
Today, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Golden Tie Tuxes is having its grand opening open house at 113 W. Blue Earth Ave. There will be a drawing for a free tuxedo rental valued at $140, among other drawings. Detert welcomes the community to see the new shop and what it all offers.
“We accept Chamber Gift Certificates here,” Detert said. “I’m very community-minded. Part of the reason I’m doing this is for the community. I knew there was a need for something like this and someone needed to do it and I knew I would have a ball doing it.”
The upcoming prom season is something to which Detert is looking forward. She enjoys working with youth and reported that she will have some cool new styles out by then.
“I try to stay as reasonably priced as possible,” she said. “Service is a big deal for me, I’m not happy unless they’re happy.”
Detert has a website and Facebook page that can be found by typing in Golden Tie Tuxes Fairmont.
“I’m working on it,” said Detert, admitting that it is all pretty new to her.
Current hours of operation at the shop are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Detert encourages anyone with questions to call her or just stop in.
“It never hurts to look,” she said.
