Board OKs DeWar for LED project

FAIRMONT — The Fairmont School Board on Tuesday approved an LED lighting project for district.

Two bids were received in September, and it was decided to hire an outside party to review the proposals. ISG of Mankato completed the study and discovered that the performance and quality of both bids were equal.

The operations committee recommended awarding the bid to DeWar Electric of Fairmont, the low bidder, at a cost of $671,927. Funding for the project comes from long-term facilities maintenance funds.

Board member Nicole Green said other districts that have switched to LED lighting report they have seen significant electricity savings over a span of 5 to 10 years.

Board member Del Ellis commented, “This is a great opportunity to use a local vendor and also save some money.”

In other business, the board heard an update from Kate Kallenbach and Molly Bleese regarding the fall musical “Into the Woods.” Both teachers talked about how different this year’s musical is from previous ones, in the sense that it has a smaller cast, and also sends a different but inspirational message. The musical intertwines the plots of several Brothers Grimm fairytales.

Several high school students who are in the musical were present to talk about it as well.

“We hope that people can come out and support our kids,” Kallenbach said.

There will be a matinee performance for senior citizens at 12:30 p.m. Nov. 8. There will be an afternoon showing on Nov. 9 for elementary students. Showings open to the public will be 7 p.m. Nov. 9-11.

In other news, the board accepted a $200 donation from Hy-Vee to be used for student activities at Fairmont Elementary School.
