Homecoming set next week at MCW

SHERBURN — Homecoming Week at Martin County West will begin with coronation at 7:30 p.m. Monday at MCW Jr./Sr. High School in Sherburn.

The 2017 Homecoming candidates are: Annie Baker, Emma Behrends, Lindsey Bettin, Hope Bicknase, Raven Jorgensen, Parker Anderson, Ethan Ask, Tucker Buchan, Christian Castelline, and Kooper Janssen.

Other activities going on throughout the week include daily pep fests, dress-up days, an “all-school” parade, powder puff volleyball, powder tuff football, and a high school homecoming dance.

There will be a Girl Scout troop formation night for girls interested in joining the Girl Scouts from 6-7 p.m. Tuesday at the Sherburn City Park. All girls interested in Scouting as well as their parents are urged to attend.

The indoor swimming pool at Martin County West Elementary School in Sherburn is now accepting registrations for fall swimming lessons.

Registration forms have been sent home with the elementary students and are also available at MCW school offices or on the school website.

The volunteer caregivers organization “CREST” will host a training session for anyone interested in taking part in the REST Companion program. The training will be held 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday in the board room at Lakeview Methodist Health Care Center in Fairmont.

This program is for volunteers who are interested in giving caregivers a much needed short break.

Lunch and a participant handbook will be provided. There is no charge for the training but registration is required by Friday. To register, or if you have questions, call the CREST office at (507) 235-3833.

Standing Ovation Dance Team practices for youth, 3 years old through 12th grade, will be held Thursday afternoon/evenings beginning this fall.

A parent meeting is planned for 6 p.m. Sept. 21 in the library at MCW Elementary School in Sherburn.

Classes will start Oct. 12, and be held in the Sherburn Community Hall.

Pilates/Barre classes are being held 4:30-5:15 p.m. and gentle yoga is being held 5:25-6:25 p.m. each Monday in Sherburn.

On Wednesdays, chair yoga will be 3:30-4:15 p.m. while fusion fitness is from 4:30-5:30 p.m. There is yoga with a prenatal focus open to all from 6:30-7:30 p.m.

All classes are held at the elementary school in Sherburn. Pre-registration isn’t required, just come for the class. Please note there won’t be classes on Sept. 25 and Sept. 28.

New staff at MCW Elementary School this year include: Robb Larson, who teaches special education; Megan Potthoff and Koren Turner, who are new paraprofessionals in Sherburn; and Ann Logan, Lori Poirot, Stephanie Moore, Tanya Schmidtke and Courtney Schultz, who are new paraprofessionals at the elementary school in Trimont.
