Truman Schools considers operating levy

TRUMAN — The Truman School Board on Monday heard from Gary Olsen of Ehlers & Associates regarding a possible operating levy referendum.

Olsen provided the board with estimated revenue and tax rates to renew an existing operating levy, which helps the district fund day-to-day operations.

The board will consider putting a referendum on the ballot in November, in an attempt to extend the existing levy for 10 more years.

Olsen said it is rare for a district not to have a referendum, as 99 percent do.

By renewing the current referendum, tax rates would stay level.

Olsen also addressed the board regarding school building refunding bonds. He will come back next month to reveal the current interest rate, and then in October the board will decide whether to accept the rate. If all goes well, taxpayers will see a savings of nearly $20,000 over the course of seven years from the bond sale.

In other news, the board heard an update from athletic director Kayla Anderson regarding upcoming fall activities. She provided the board with enrollment numbers for the upcoming season.

She also provided cost estimates, as the football team is in need of new pants for the players. Anderson said they plan to purchase 50 pairs of Nike brand, purple pants at $31.99 each, for a total of $1,599. The cost will be split with Granada-Huntley-East Chain. Board members approved the request, stating they are aware that it has been five years since the team has had new pants.

In other action, the board:

o Approved a bus contract with Truman Bus Service, Inc. for a fixed rate for the next two years, but with an increase of $2 per hour more the third year for driver time going to and from extracurricular activities.

o Approved the student/parent handbook, provided the addition of a bullying policy is included.
