Church planning Worship on Water

FAIRMONT — Grace Lutheran Church in Fairmont will host a “Worship on Water” service at 11 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 6. The event will be conducted from a pontoon, stationed in the bay near Ward Park on Lake Sisseton.

The community is welcome to attend in any watercraft, but it is also expected that the message will be heard on the shore and sitting at Ward Park.

Pastor Steven Berkeland will offer the service, and there will be a small ensemble aboard the pontoon as well. The event is expected to take about 40 minutes, as it is primarily a music and message service.

Jack Gerhardt, a church council member at Grace, said the idea came from a quote a friend of his, Jeff Paris, had once said: “I’d rather be in my boat thinking about church, than sitting in church thinking about my boat.”

“We decided to combine the best of both worlds in an attempt to engage a broader audience,” Gerhardt explained.

Gerhardt doesn’t believe a service like this has taken place in Fairmont before. Anything prior has taken place on the shore.

Anyone planning to go should pull up and anchor their watercraft near the Worship on Water pontoon a little before 11 a.m. Sunday. The spot will be marked with banners and a cross.

“There is no rain alternative planned, so we’re hoping that Mother Nature cooperates,” Gerhardt said. “We’d like to welcome everyone from the community, no matter what denomination you are.”
