City park to host Memorial Day event

SHERBURN — Sherburn VFW and Sherburn American Legion Post 356 will host the Memorial Day program 10:30 a.m. Monday at the city park in Sherburn.

In case of inclement weather, the event will be held at the Martin County West High School in Sherburn.

Jeff Hagen will be the guest speaker, which will include musical numbers.

A picnic in the park will immediately follow the program. Sherburn Area Task Force will serve grilled hamburgers and hot dogs to those attending the Memorial Day service, and to anyone else who would like to enjoy a picnic meal. There will be a free will donation for the meal.

If you’re able to do so, please come on Saturday to the city park in Sherburn to help with the 260 flags that will be put up that day around and throughout the park. They will begin 8 a.m. Saturday, and they will retire the flags 5:30 p.m. Monday. They would welcome volunteering for any of the two days or both if you can.

Eight new flags will be dedicated and added this year to the Avenue of Flags during the Memorial Day program at the park. Those flags will honor the following servicemen: Robert Hassing, David Holtz Sr., Robert Johnson, Eugene McDonald, Gerald McDonald, Lawrence McDonald, Leo McDonald and Richard McDonald.

There will be no school on Monday for MCW students in observance of Memorial Day. The last day of school for all MCW students will be June 1.

Ruby’s Pantry will have food distributions from 10-11:30 a.m. Saturday at East Chain Evangelical Free Church, located at 507 280th Ave., rural East Chain. There are no income or residency guidelines, but you must bring a $20 cash donation, and you’ll receive an abundance of food. Please bring two large boxes or laundry baskets for your food.

There will be a come-and-go bridal shower for Taylor Olson, bride-to-be of John Elverson from 10 a.m. to noon June 3 at First Lutheran Church in Trimont.

Taylor’s parents are Steve and Deb Olson of Trimont, and John’s parents are Tom and Cindy Elverson of Dell Rapids, S.D. The couple is registered at Target, Kohl’s and Sterling Drug.

Sherburn Lions Club will host an 18-hole four-person, best shot golf tournament on June 9 at Fox Lake Golf Course, rural Sherburn. Everyone is welcome to participate, but please RSVP by June 8 to Mark Wohlhuter at (507) 764-4943. If you would like to reserve a golf cart, please call (507) 764-8381.

MCW Community Education and Recreation is offering Maverick volleyball camps for students who have completed grades 2-11 June 19-21 at MCW Elementary School in Trimont. The camps will focus on different skill levels depending on the ages of those attending.

The Sherburn pool manager is looking for resin lawn chairs for use this summer at the pool. They will accept any style or color as long as the chairs aren’t broken. If you have chairs that you’re willing to donate, contact pool manager Elizabeth Viesselman.

There will be fitness swimming from 6-8 a.m. and 5:30-6:30 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and also from noon to 1 p.m. on Saturdays at the Sherburn indoor swimming pool. They will also offer open swimming for all ages from 1-4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.
