Seniors enjoy potluck

Blue Earth area senior citizens participated in their monthly potluck at the Blue Earth Senior Center on Friday afternoon. Senior citizens and their peers spent the hour socializing and enjoying a home-cooked meal made by the senior participants.

The Blue Earth Senior Center, open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., hosts many different types of events for senior citizens throughout the year. Some of these include health screenings, fundraisers, “bring a friend day,” monthly potlucks, yearly health fairs, foot clinic activities twice a month, and bus trips several times a year.

In addition to these events, the Center offers activities for seniors each day. A few of these activities include card games, coffee hours and hot meals for members of the community to participate in.

Sue Cassens, a participant at the potluck Friday, mentioned that the Center offers a meal to the public Monday through Friday.

“We have hot meals every noon for anybody who wants to come in,” she said.

To participate in the daily meal, reservations are required before 8:45 a.m. on the day of the meal. Seniors can call the Senior Center at (507) 526-3850 to reserve their meal.

On occasion, the Center also offers special events partnering with Blue Earth schools. On the first four Fridays of March, 30 students from Blue Earth Elementary School will visit the Senior Center to play cards with seniors to promote “the socialization of seniors,” said Linda Jahnke, director of the Blue Earth Senior Center.

Health screenings, offered at the Center several times a year, are important to seniors because they keep the community educated, safe and healthy. During these screenings, seniors can be examined for skin cancer, have their blood pressure checked, and so on.

As well as these health screenings, the Blue Earth Senior Center also offers a yearly health fair sponsored by student nurses from Presentation College. Additionally, a foot clinic event is offered by the Senior Center on the second Monday and last Tuesday of each month.
