Park Board acknowledges gifts

FAIRMONT — The Fairmont Park Board acknowledged several gifts at its meeting earlier this week, and evidence of those gifts will be appearing in the city’s parks.

A $3,000 gift from Mary Jane (Persinger) Setterlund will be used to replace the existing picket fence with a maintenance-free version. Setterlund donated the money in memory of her mother, Peg Persinger, and Mrs. E. Grolle, the Francks and the Schuders, all families that lived around and utilized Lincoln Park.

Other donations include three purple martin houses from the Martin County Conservation Club and two trees from the City of Lakes Garden Club for Steve Pierce Park.

8,300 turkeys lost in fire

LITCHFIELD (AP) — Thousands of turkeys have been lost in a fire in Meeker County.

Sheriff’s deputies say a barn owned by Langmo Farms near Litchfield caught fire Tuesday, killing about 8,300 young birds. None survived. The barn was a total loss.

Authorities say a propane heater in the barn may have sparked the fire, but the investigation continues. A dollar loss has not yet been determined.
