GHEC adds board member
GRANADA — Granada-Huntley-East Chain has a new school board member. Jessica Salic took the oath of office this week.
Officers for 2017 are Bryan Nowicki, chairman; Robert Garry, vice-chairman; Chris Pytleski, secretary; and Troy Jensen, treasurer.
Salaries remain the same: chairman, $400; vice-chair, $100; clerk/secretary, $300; treasurer, $100; regular meeting, $45; all-day meeting, $60.
In other GHEC news, Friday marked the end of the first semester, and a staff development day is scheduled for Monday. The day will include preparing for second semester courses and finishing first semester grades.
Principal Mandy Fletcher’s report stated, “There are several normal class changes at semester time, including courses in the industrial tech department, business ed department, social studies department and art. There is one elective in the English department that changes this semester and that is popular literature (first semester was communications during this hour). Teachers have until the end of the month to review courses in the registration booklet for next year, and then Mrs. Millmann will plan to register students the following month.”
In another matter, the board accepted a proclamation from Gov. Mark Dayton that next week, Jan. 23-27, is paraprofessional week. Paraprofessionals at GHEC will receive certificates of recognition for their work in the classroom.
In other school business, it was reported that the Leadership team met last month and focused on differentiation in the classroom. A schedule is being worked to put teachers in small groups to observe other teachers utilizing differentiation in their classrooms.
Fletcher’s reported stated, “This actually is an extension of and supports our work with NWEA testing as interpreting the data and making grouping/instructional decision based on that data is our goal of NWEA testing data.”
The Leadership team also discussed technology and input from the staff over the matter. This spring, GHEC will pilot a shared Chromebook cart between two high school classes, and goals for this pilot are being discussed between teachers and Fletcher.
In other news:
o Board members attended the MSBA Leadership Conference “Courageous Leadership” on Jan. 19-20, where they heard keynote speakers talk about education policies and trends, and participated in workshops.
o Facility update: The science lab is to be remodeled the last two weeks of February. All other renovations to the school have all been approved by the state.
