New program aiding Truman
TRUMAN — Truman School Board welcomed a new member, Allison Klassen, at its first meeting of the year Tuesday.
The board also elected new officers: Mike Pfeil, chairman; Darrel Drevlow vice chairman; Allison Klassen, clerk; and LeAnn Maloney, treasurer.
In other business, the board heard from Melissa Curry and Tina Raske, who presented a slideshow explaining how they are coordinating with school staff prior to Special Education placement with Response to Intervention (RTI).
RTI has been used since the beginning of the school year. It is a specific set of steps to help a child improve in an area of need, without taking them away from classroom time. It also helps a student succeed before testing for special needs/learning disability.
By assessing students in two categories — academics and behavior — Curry and Raske are able to teach specific tools to help students to the best of their abilities by trying to understand their point of view rather than treat all students the same.
The duo say the numbers are looking positive, and staff is accepting the new way of thinking.
Other school news includes:
o Resignations by Angela Terry, daycare; Kim Hastad, 3-year-old program/para. New hires are daycare employees Patricia Meinert, full time; Stephanie Hodge, substitute; Jackie Schuder, part time; and Malory Thompson, 3-year-old program/para.
o After a short presentation regarding flag football, currently held in Fairmont, the board approved flag football in Truman. The times will continue to be the same, Tuesday nights from 6-7:30 for grades 3-6, from June to July. It is open to those in the area.
