Prairieland OKs mold project

TRUMAN — A mold remediation project that has been discussed for several months is beginning at the Prairieland garbage-processing plant in Truman.

Prairieland’s board of directors — the commissioners of Martin and Faribault counties — approved the low bid for the project Friday.

“We are having some water leakage resulting in mold issues,” said Billeye Rabbe, Prairieland executive director. “We have not changed things in 25 years and will also be replacing some electrical and plumbing as well.”

The project cost is about $45,000.

In other plant news, Prairieland received 1,290 tons of waste in December, with 709 tons going to Xcel in Mankato to be used as refuse-derived fuel to produce electricity.

In another manner, Prairieland’s electrical usage for 2016 ended with the lowest total recorded since 2013. This year may continue the trend as LED lights could be installed throughout Prairieland.

In other business, the board approved tracking and accounting for all garbage.

“We are going to start tracking the extra garbage brought in by programs,” Rabbe said. “Some of this extra garbage has not been accounted and we will be billing those accountable. We have made forms that those who drop off garbage from programs or on the weekend will have to fill out to let us know how much is being dropped off and from where.”

In other Prairieland news:

o Highlights of 2016 operations were discussed, such as replacements, improvements, updated contracts and continuing relationships with communities. Goals for 2017 have been drafted, and more will be added in coming months.

“I am very excited to work on the concrete on the dry area and also equally excited to get the mold remediation underway,” Rabbe said. “We will continue the great management skills between counties in 2017 and look forward to this new year.”

o Residents of Trimont will begin the county curbside collection program starting July 1.

o The new drop site in Winnebago is reported to be going well, according to Chris Cyphers from B & B Sanitation and Recycling.

o The board approved a 2017 executive committee: John Roper, chairman; Dan Schmidtke, vice chairman; Greg Young, secretary; and Tom Mahoney, treasurer.
